About the Opportunity

A smarter power grid will greatly enhance our ability to serve and interact with our customers through new, cutting-edge technologies. The Smart Grid Engineer will directly support our efforts to modernize the FE distribution system and allow the FE utilities to deliver more customer choices and information, provide greater flexibility to restore power outages, optimize power quality, and integrate distributed energy resources. The Smart Grid Engineer must be innovative and forward thinking and will work with FEU distribution companies on Smart Grid Distribution projects. Travel will be required.

This Engineer will have matured to the full point of competency and proficiency. Possess strong element skills and knowledge.

Focus on continuous improvement. Provide leadership on initiatives and projects.

This position will work with existing OH Smart Grid programs, specifically Integrated Volt Var control (IVVC). The Engineer will monitor, ensure, and report the benefits of these technologies. In addition to IVVC this engineer will also be involved with Distribution Automation (DA).

This Engineer must be innovative and forward thinking and will work with FEU distribution companies on Smart Grid Distribution projects. Travel will be required.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working with existing OH Smart Grid programs, specifically Integrated Volt Var control and Distribution Automation focusing on continuous improvement. Provide leadership on initiatives and projects.

  • Checking performance of Distribution Smart Grid devices daily.

  • Monitoring, ensure, and report on the benefits of these technologies.

  • Ensuring Smart Grid software performance and upgrade regression testing.

  • Analyzing and reporting Smart IVVC performance by reviewing Smart Grid IVVC data to extract kWhr and kWd savings.

  • Suggest automation of IVVC tools and practices

  • Educating and directing others on smart grid matters, improving smart grid programs and processes.

  • Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements.

  • Independently anticipate and meet internal/external technical needs.

  • Providing a high level of service to operating company personnel and other FE departments as required, continuous support, and proactive involvement to leadership and fellow peers surrounding smart grid subject matter.

  • Collaborating with FEU operations and other engineering personnel on emerging smart grid projects. Conceptualizing new Smart Grid projects, including project cost estimating, projected customer and operational benefits.

  • Consistently anticipating and delivering results.

  • Providing advice, education, and encouragement to others.

  • Candidates must have a willingness for frequent travel to Company locations, as well as out of area locations as necessary. Off-hours work should be expected to support storm restoration.


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accreditedinstitution and a minimum 5 plus years engineering experience required. Electrical Engineering preferred. (PE license preferred.)

  • Strong understanding of Distribution Voltage control devices including Load Tap Changers (LTCs), Voltage Regulators, Capacitor Banks, and Static VAR Compensators SVCs

  • Strong understanding of the “Power Triangle”

  • Strong commitment to Safety – must be committed to a safety and human performance culturedemonstrated by a complete understanding of the importance of these programs.

  • Strong presentation skills to any level of management, and any size of audience.

  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word.

  • Proficient with data base query tools (i.e., Toad Data Point, Brio, SQL).

  • Experience with SAP, Cyme, and GISView a plus.

  • Background in Distribution and or Substation Engineering is preferred

  • Experience with relay protection and SEL relay programming and troubleshooting.

  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships

  • Able to achieve active learning through a continued effort to develop breadth of knowledge, skills, and perspective.
