Southern Company Costing Analyst in Birmingham, Alabama

Costing Analyst


The Costing and Load Research team, within Regulatory Pricing and Costing, produces and supports cost of service analyses required for regulatory filings, wholesale agreements, Regulatory Pricing, Treasury, Marketing Strategy, Programs, Intelligence and Innovation support, profitability analyses, and various management requests. This position will report to the Team Leader of Regulatory Costing.

Responsibilities of the analyst include:

  • Perform cost of service analyses to meet requests described above

  • Develop the Jurisdictional Separation Study (cost of service) filing to the Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC)

  • Support other, annual rate filings and informational submittals to the APSC

  • Collect, validate, and maintain data from a diverse group of functional areas in support of cost of service studies

  • Establish and maintain credibility with our external stakeholders through accurate and timely filings and effective communication

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with our internal stakeholders (Accounting, Regulatory Affairs, Financial Planning, Treasury, Resource Planning, SCS Costing & Energy Analysis, etc.) to ensure our analyses incorporate changes in business practices or accounting standards

  • Communicate summarized, utility concepts and large data sets through written communication and presentations for internal and external stakeholders

  • Work closely with other Regulatory personnel to define parameters to be used for rate development and design

  • Work closely with accounting personnel in reconciling cost of service and other analyses to Company books and records

  • Initiate the development of automated tools/systems that will maximize efficiency of our business processes; continually re-evaluate business processes and tools/technology to improve productivity and efficiency of the team

Job Experience and Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or related field is preferred

  • Advanced degree in Business, Accounting or Finance is a plus

  • Experience in structuring, analyzing, summarizing and presenting large volumes of data

  • Experience in or exposure to the application of accounting practices, standards or PSC orders within the utility industry is preferred

  • Experience in managing cross functional projects and building and managing effective working relationships across multiple business units is preferred

  • Experience in Regulatory Affairs, Costing, Pricing, Load Research, Data Analysis, Accounting, Economic Analysis, Finance, Generation, Power Delivery or System Planning is a plus

  • Experience in or exposure to the implementation of utility rate design, structuring or modification within the utility industry is a plus

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong abilities in the use of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, including the utilization of advanced features and implementation of best practices

  • Ability to program in Visual Basic and SAS is a plus

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and motivation for quality, accuracy and timeliness

  • Demonstrated ability to apply problem solving and strategic thinking skills to challenging assignments with no clear solution

  • Understanding of utility financial reporting through accounting schedules, annual SEC filings and FERC filings is preferred

  • Familiarity with Southern Company and utility business operations, Company rates, financial goals, and regulatory environment is a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt, support the position of, and manage multiple tasks with changing priorities

  • Effective interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to build relationships at all levels and with external stakeholders

  • Represents Regulatory Affairs with a positive attitude and assures continued respect and trust in work products
