NY Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a five-year initiative with a budget of $500M and is essential for grid modernization. The AMI initiative includes the replacement of the existing electric meters and upgrading gas meters with smart devices, which includes the implementation of systems and processes to provide two-way communication. AMI will provide real-time information to improve Avangrid customer service, support power restoration efforts, improve power quality, and enable conservation efforts.
This position will report directly to the Program Director within Operational Smart Grids (OSG) and will function as a core-member of the NY AMI project team to perform daily operations, develop and implement solutions for the Head-End System (HES), process and analyze meter data for customer service, web portals, HES to Meter Data Management System (MDMS) integration, and lead the initiation of other applications in support of business requirements. The selected person will join a team of technical systems and metering experts and will collaborate with metering peers in Maine and Connecticut, and aid subject matter experts from Avangrid IT, Telecommunications, Distribution Automation, Customer Service, and Innovation to assure high data quality. The selected person will be responsible for developing reports using data contained within the HES to guarantee accurate records are maintained for internal / external auditors and be required to troubleshoot meter data and/or infrastructure problems.
Avangrid has multiple offices in New York, Connecticut, and Maine. The person in this position could be based at any regional office in those states including some locations not listed above. This position can be performed remotely on a temporary basis until directed otherwise given COVID-19. Avangrid employees may be assigned a system emergency role and in the event of a system emergency, may be required to work outside of their regular schedule/job duties.
Upon completion of the NY AMI initiative, this position will transition to the OSG Smart Metering department to lead the on-going operation of the NY AMI HES.
Major Roles & Responsibilities
Collaborate across multiple Operating Companies and functional areas including Electric Operations, Asset Management, Distribution Planning, Customer Service, Metering, GIS Operations, and IT to meet AMI project integration requirements.
Perform as technical lead for the implementation of systems and development of future team to prepare the transition of the HES to the Smart Metering organization.
Oversee the overall state of meter data collection within the HES.
Lead the data extraction, cleansing, validation, and complete analysis of massive volumes of data with high accuracy and attention to detail leveraging XML, MS Access, Excel, SQL / Oracle queries, or other similar programs.
Perform daily data operations in SAP, the HES, handheld meter reading devices, and other assigned systems.
Provide expedient and detailed support to the HES data users, and function as a Smart Metering liaison to produce specific requests or ad-hoc system operation reports. Identify best practices and process improvements, achieve consensus, and initiate future enhancements of the HES impacting the Avangrid IT and OT departments.
Proactively identify a range of moderate to complex problems including data anomalies, evidence of network risks, issues, meter failures, meter tampering, energy diversion, failed / warned tasks, translation timeouts, interval and register data drops, and failed or rejected validations / edits.
Analyze possible solutions according to standard practices and procedures, manage, and implement problem solving methods using analytics tools.
Initiate trouble orders with the Meter Engineering and AMI Network Operations areas for field investigation of problematic meter locations, and to troubleshoot metering and infrastructure problems.
Represent Smart Metering for all installation of HES, meter program software, and security upgrades. Support testing and debugging of upgrades.
Leveraging your technical knowledge to update the historical and develop new internal and external HES business process documentation, protocols, Standard Operating Procedures.
Perform maintenance activity of HES computer files and data as required.
Generate and present reports in PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
Provide technical assistance to field personnel.
Maintain confidentiality of all customer and company data.
Education & Experience Required:
Advanced technical expertise.
Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering / Computer Science, or a minimum of 5 years’ experience working with computer related systems.
Experience working with IT from development of IT Project / Product Definition, to requirements identification and design.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Project, SharePoint, Teams).
Working knowledge of several utility business areas (e.g., Electric Operations, Gas Operations, Customer Service, Asset Management & Planning, IT
Knowledge of Information Technology design, architecture, and data virtualization.
Knowledge of Meter Data / Electric Operations / Distribution Planning data is a plus.
Change Management, PMP and/or Lean Six Sigma Certification(s) is a plus.
Regulatory experience is a plus.
Knowledge of SAP, customer billing, or metering systems.
Ability to operate in a fast-paced dynamic environment, multi-task, organize, and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Ability to interact with end users and provide expedient and detailed support to data user community.
Ability to provide technical support to field personnel.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with others and have strong team skills.
