2021 Diversity Scholar Program

Joint Summer Associate Experience

Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. and the Eversource Energy Legal Department will provide a law student of a diverse background a unique opportunity to participate in their summer associate programs. The selected student will spend half of the summer with the Eversource Legal Department where he/she will have an opportunity to participate in the day-to-day work experiences of in-house attorneys at a major Connecticut utility. The other half of the program will be spent at Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, a major Connecticut law firm, participating in its summer associate program with exposure to its training programs and work assignments as well as getting a feel for what a career at a firm is like. A mentor from each organization will provide professional and personal development assistance.

Updike, Kelly & Spellacy and Eversource are committed to the recruitment and retention of attorneys from diverse backgrounds. Eversource and Updike, Kelly & Spellacy are active in the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity and were founding members of this group. As part of our ongoing efforts to promote diversity in the Connecticut legal community, we are pleased to offer this opportunity to first and second year law students.

Selection Criteria

All students of diverse backgrounds at ABA accredited law schools are encouraged to apply. The candidate will be selected based on academic, personal and professional achievement.

Application Procedure

Interested candidates should submit:

 A resume

 Academic transcripts

 A writing sample

 A personal statement describing the contribution you would make to promote diversity in the legal profession, and an explanation of your interest in this program in particular

 Two references, including one from a law school professor or someone who can comment on your legal work

2021 Program Application Deadline: January 20, 2021

Candidates selected for interviews will meet with attorneys from Updike, Kelly & Spellacy and the Eversource Legal Department.
