Job Purpose

Responsible for the 7/24 safe and reliable operation of the 2000 MW HVDC interconnection. Coordinate with ISO-NE, HQ Transmission Security for all import/export interchanges. Monitor and respond to alarms to ensure the facility is operated within established operating criteria. Document and provide notification for all events.

Key Accountabilities

Independently work rotating 12 hour shifts to safely and reliably operate the HVDC Interconnection.

Participate in the training structure and program for network operator

Monitor stations and equipment to maintain all within operating limits and design ratings.

Monitor and adjust Mvars to meet system needs without violating station ratings.

Respond to all alarms and network abnormalities and determine best corrective actions.

Maintain knowledge of and administer HVDC Common Operating Instructions.

Work with REMVEC to ensure system security as impacted by HVDC. Adhere to all ISO-NE Operating Procedures for bulk transmission.

Communicate operational changes and outage requests with Transmission Security, ISO-NE, Hydro Quebec

Issue switching orders as Local Control Authority for 480V station critical equipment.

Provide emergency response to failures and contingencies.

Optimize and track DC Network availability performance and provide reports, including CIGRE and utilization, to the Operations Manager.

Shift differential will be introduced once the training is completed

Other duties as assigned

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
Qualifications

Associates or higher degree in Engineering or equivalent experience in electric transmission systems.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of electrical utility system.

On National Grid Clearance and Control list or able to qualify within 3 months.

Willing and available to respond to scheduling emergencies to support the HVDC Network operations

Must be reliable, trustworthy and able to work well in a strong team environment.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are a must.

Knowledge of High Voltage Transmission Systems. Experience with HVDC Operations a strong plus.

Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills.

Strong computer skills, knowledge in or ability to learn various National Grid software applications especially Microsoft Office products.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision with demonstrated critical thinking ability.

Candidates must successfully pass an aptitude assessment and a required background check.
