The Area Manager is responsible for overall safety performance and profit/loss for a specific operating unit. Manager will oversee underground and/or overhead construction, procurement, design and inspection, and related lines of work. Performs marketing and sales activities to grow and diversify the business. This position supports operations and works with customers, senior leaders, and personnel from other departments.

Essential Functions

  • Direct the day-to-day operations of construction projects for the operating unit.

  • Responsible for safe work practices and implementing company safety programs for all subordinates.

  • Ensure all work production meets internal and external quality standards.

  • Develop and implement resource and production plans to meet customer needs.

  • Make contacts and develop and maintain business relationships with customers, subcontractors, vendors, and industry associations.

  • Travel to specific job sites (frequency depending on size, location, and issues) in order to coach and support field supervisors.

  • Evaluate and encourage the performance of all subordinates, including conducting formal performance appraisals on direct subordinates.

  • Establish tracking methods and systems in order to measure and report crew productivity; compare results versus estimates and report weekly job progress on all assigned work.

  • Identify, problem solve, and correct problem areas on loss or low profit jobs.

  • Responsible for meeting and exceeding established Key Performance

  • Indicators (KPIs) as defined by executive leadership.

  • Approve weekly payroll and equipment reporting for the operating unit.

  • Manage the equipment and fleet, ensuring maximum utilization and coordinating maintenance.

  • Manage and control the procurement, use, and application of tools and equipment.

  • Manage labor and maintain employee relations regarding hiring, terminations, and employee resolution.

  • Develop bids and proposals for targeted opportunities in the designated market.

  • Provide General Manager with financial and operational performance management reporting.

  • Provide employee training and professional development.

  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This job operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, twisting, reaching above shoulder level, working in confined spaces, working off a pole or in a bucket. Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind for 10 hour work days, with breaks. During storms this role may work in these conditions from 10 to 15 hours daily, breaks included.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 100 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A High School Diploma, or equivalent, with 5 years of experience leading utility construction.

  2. Proven track record of leading a large construction organization.

  3. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study.

  2. More than 5 years of related managerial experience.

  3. Formal training in management, supervision, and administration.
