Innovation Analyst


Innovation Analyst will be a collaborative partner delivering innovative ideas, solutions and services to solve business problems. The person will be working with design thinking process and will participate in innovation projects uncovering requirements and conducting research on emerging technologies for deeper understanding. With this knowledge the person will reveal insights about solutions and surface new opportunities for innovation. The Innovation Analyst will support the delivery of projects around innovation solutions by working closely with the technical teams and business.

  • Ability to research and learn technology problems quickly and think of creative ways to solve problems.

  • Ability to demonstrate technologies to non-technical people.

  • Identify pilot opportunities with business units and provide input to business cases.

  • Research disruptive technologies. Share information, create presentation materials, and present as needed.

  • Lead and participate in Incubator projects as assigned to pilot emerging technologies. Work with the individual business units to test and develop the technologies as needed.

  • Make recommendations on new technologies and business uses as needed. Use research advisory services, peer utilities, vendors, business units, and the internet to conduct research.

  • Identify pilot opportunities with business units and provide input to business cases.

  • May Lead and facilitate Ideation Hackathons including creative ideation, documentation of resulting ideas, and logistical support

  • Requires creative thinking skills and the ability to combine business needs with technology to solve Southern Company’s business problems.

  • Create dashboards and visual graphics to display metrics creatively

  • Elicits, analyzes, and documents business requirements to deliver business value and efficient systems delivery.

  • Responsible for thoroughly understanding the requirements, managing the specifications of the requirements, verifying the fulfillment of all requirements, and making recommendations to ensure business needs are met.

  • Liaises with IT project teams to communicate business priorities, translate business requirements into technical requirements and identify appropriate solutions

  • Lead requirement review sessions evaluating comprehensiveness and usability and makes recommendations for system design, design changes, etc. to ensure compliance to requirements. May include participating in code reviews, unit test reviews, system test reviews, etc. to ensure requirements are met.

  • Facilitates regular requirement gathering and design sessions with user community and communicates expectations to the development team

  • Negotiates innovative business solutions that satisfy customer needs, are consistent with architectural guidelines, and conform to security standards

  • Works with multiple stakeholders to assess the impact of proposed solutions, facilitate deployments and minimize disruption to services

  • Works with business partners to conduct user acceptance testing

  • Documents user manuals to describe application installation and operating procedures

  • Coordinates the project resources to ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget

  • Provides consultative support on business-led technology initiatives

Required Skills / Experience / Certifications:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Work, Office, TEAMS, Forms.

  • Ability to research and trouble shoot technology problems and find solutions with ambiguity and minimal guidance.

  • Demonstrates technical competency and ability to adjust to and learn new technologies quickly.

  • Experience with design thinking knowledge

  • Experience using prototyping and storyboarding

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in research or business analysis

  • Bachelors’ degree in business, computer or engineering related field of study.

Preferred Skills / Experience:

  • Knowledge of MS Power BI, SQL, and digital media.

  • Strong understanding of agile processes and applied methodologies

  • Good organization, attention to details, responsibility, follow-through skills, timeliness.

  • Take personal responsibility for the success of all projects. Be a role model for teamwork to ensure that projects are completed successfully and on time. Ability to work with team members to resolve technical problems quickly and respectfully when they occur.
