Reports to: GIS Support Supervisor for Geographic Solutions & Services (GSS)

Location: This position is located at 755 Jefferson Street NW, Atlanta, Georgia.

Job Summary

  • Georgia Power’s Distribution GIS application (DistGIS) supplies data to a host of mission critical applications. This position will serve on the GIS support team as a technical contact and subject-matter-expert for DistGIS. This position is responsible for resolving system integration issues and leading deployment efforts associated with DistGIS upgrades. This role provides spatial data analytics and reporting to various business leaders. Additionally, this position supports other enterprise mapping applications and interfaces, working across business units to achieve results. The position helps coordinate our strategic efforts to integrate new technologies into the GIS enterprise. The successful candidate must have demonstrated the ability to perform at a high level with minimum supervision. Some emergency after-hours and weekend work will be required.

Job Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Provide technical support and assistance to statewide DistGIS user community

  • Champion our Southern Company enterprise initiative to standardized and migrate to Esri’s Utility Network Management Extension

  • Support the GIS interfaces to our Outage Management System (TCMS/NMS), Web Viewers (DistView & GISWeb), Planning Tool (CYME), ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, and various mobile mapping solutions

  • Collaborate with the Southern Company Technology Organization (TO), GIS software vendors, and peer utilities to develop functional requirements and advocate for enhancements based on end-user input

  • Direct and manage application testing, performance benchmarking, and deployment efforts for software upgrades

  • Configure and implement specific business unit rules and process workflows

  • Perform advanced data analytics and reporting functions to support Property Accounting, Marketing, Metering, Reliability, and others

  • Prepare maps, shapefiles, and geodatabases to support Asset Management inspection programs, Cable Locating, Forestry, and other business units

  • Protect the integrity of our enterprise geodatabase, distribution facility data, asset records, and network model

  • Administer the publication of DistGIS data via server and cloud-centric solutions

  • Develop geoprocessing models or scripts to automate reoccurring tasks

  • Design, deploy, and support mobile and web enabled GIS solutions

  • Conduct and assist with end-user training

  • Author and edit training manuals and self-help documentation

Job Requirements


  • BS in Computer Science, MIS, GIS, or Engineering related field is preferred


  • Minimum 2 years working with Esri’s ArcGIS 10.x desktop products

  • Prior experience with Esri’s ArcGIS Pro application is highly desirable

  • Proven record of dealing effectively with internal and external customers required

  • Capable of analyzing spatial data and compiling detailed reports

  • History of providing technical support for an enterprise, versioned ArcSDE geodatabase within a Citrix environment is desirable

  • Experience supporting ArcGIS Server and authoring map services is preferred

  • Competency using ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal) and ArcGIS Online is a plus

  • Understanding of electric utility engineering work practices and line construction is valuable

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills are a must

  • Demonstrable ability to fully comprehend user requests and deliver solutions

  • Outstanding documentation, reporting, and project management skills are required

  • Effective interpersonal behaviors that encourage collaboration and teamwork are essential

  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments with little direction

  • Proficiency with Esri’s geoprocessing tools or Python scripting is highly desirable

  • Knowledge of Esri’s Arcade scripting language is advantageous

  • Familiarity creating tiled map caches and feature services is preferred

  • Understanding of services-based architecture is valuable

  • Awareness of Safe Software FME or ETL tools is beneficial

  • Grasp of RDMS architecture and SQL is a plus
