Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan
This position will support the Power and Industrial (P&I) Group in the implementation and oversight of safety and industrial hygiene (IH) programs and policies at all facilities. The position reports to the Manager, Safety Team. The Safety Specialist will be responsible for providing technical support and direction to various sites located throughout the United States. Experience in industrial safety, safety management system development, training, field/site safety auditing, project management, and hazard identification and control is preferred. This is a corporate staff position based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Travel is required (approx. 25%).
Communicate, administer, and maintain existing safety programs and procedures for assigned sites
Develop, implement and continuously improve safety programs
Create and deliver safety related reports and presentations
Develop and present safety related training and educational programs
Fulfill the safety role of H&S professional for small sites
Mentor the site EH&S professional and plant personnel
Conduct, monitor and follow up on site safety assessments
Work with site management to ensure compliance with regulations and adherence to company expectations
Provide leadership and direction in proactive safety-related activities
Travel to project sites to meet duties/responsibilities
Perform all other related duties as assigned
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or a related field (Industrial Safety, Construction Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, etc.)
Practical experience in the field of safety
Master’s degree in Occupational Safety or a related field (Industrial Safety, Construction Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, etc.)
Experience in heavy industrial operations, power plants, industrial energy services and/or renewable energy operations
Knowledge of and experience with safety management systems (ISO 45001, OHSAS 18001, ANSI Z10)
Knowledge of electrical regulations and standards
Organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks
Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of occupational safety regulations
Ability to function within a matrix organization in which functional and business leaders have equal authority within the organization
Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both a functional (“solid line”) and business leader (“dotted line”), who collaborate on employee issues and decisions, including performance management, compensation and development

The employee in this classification will be required to frequently lift objects of up to 10 pounds in weight. Occasionally the employee will have to lift/move objects of up to 25 pounds in weight. Vision requirements for this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Additional physical requirements for this position are: ability to climb ladders up to 20 feet in height, ability to climb stairs up to 5 flights at a time, ability to wear negative-pressure respirators for up to 2 hours a day, ability to perform light work in hot environments (100 degrees F) for up to 6 hour/day, ability to wear protective equipment (including, but not limited to hearing protection, hard hat, safety boots, safety glasses or goggles, FR/AR clothing, gloves) for up to 8 hours/day, ability to work in a noisy environment (with hearing protection), ability to walk/stand (with occasional breaks) for up to 7 hours/day, ability to work at heights (protected by guardrails and/or personal fall arrest equipment), ability to work in an environment with exposures to magnetic and/or electrical fields, wood dust, coal dust, coke oven emissions, organic vapors, and/or metal fumes (all within OSHA limits).
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both in a business office setting and at a project site. While working at the project site, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including cold/hot, wet and/or humid conditions, and may work near moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration (see physical requirements above). The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in the office, but may become loud at the project site.
