Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Provides leadership, manages employees, and directs activities of PPL's Electric Utility's Distribution planning, interconnection, distributed energy resource interconnection as well as Asset health and programs organizations to evaluate system performance and create projects and programs to reinforce the distribution system infrastructure, maintain high performance assets, improve the reliability of the distribution system, and serve customers with the safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions

  2. Provides leadership, manages employees R&D Engineering, Distribution Estimating Engineering, and Tariff Rules & Riders.

  3. Directs the timely identification of risks and exposures that may affect distribution asset performance consistent with regulatory requirements and good utility practice, initiation of appropriate remediation and exposure mitigation measures, including development of asset maintenance programs, and represents a PPL EU as the PA PUC reliability performance contact and subject-matter expert. Directs the development of system reliability improvement initiatives, metrics and analyses, as well as the annual and five-year business plans, budgets, and programs for distribution maintenance/ improvement/optimization/upgrade at a total annual budget of approximately $300 million.

  4. Directs the development and implementation of short and long-term projects and asset programs, both Capital and Expense, while optimizing resource plans and ensuring the highest level of customer services. Responsible for the development and monitoring of maintenance programs, selection of equipment and reliable operation of Distribution Assets. Responsible for reliable operations of approximately 1200 distribution lines serving electricity to 1.4 million customers in PA.

  5. Approves decisions and budget changes and adjustments within the 5-year distribution budget plan and directs capacity planning of the distribution system in accordance with PPL Reliability Principles and Practices. Ensures that the distribution assets programs are optimally developed to provide the highest levels of system reliability at lower costs

  6. Manages the 5-year distribution budget currently valued at $300 million annually including system capacity, maintenance programs, system upgrades and asset optimization programs; balance cost versus business objectives with appropriate capital and maintenance investments. Responds to and manages adjustments in annual and five-year business plans, based on changing business conditions, by working in partnership with other business process owners.

  7. Leads Distribution planning, interconnection, distributed energy resource interconnection as well as Asset health and programs in developing organizational priorities, goals, and metrics that help ensure efficient and effective capacity planning activities, implementation of cross-departmental reliability improvement initiatives, development and accomplishment of maintenance/improvement/optimization work scope and programs, while assessing the resultant impact on reliability and other outcomes for feedback into predictive models, equipment changes and future programs; monitors to ensure results are achieved and direct improvements based on performance indicators.

  8. Provides overall project management for Distributed energy interconnection request, works closely with distribution operations around distributed energy standards and interconnection requirements.

  9. Provides strategic directions on engineering processes and execution of the budget work plan and use of equipment on the distribution system to maximize the returns on assets over the life cycles, and meet the company's goals including the safety of equipment, highest reliability performance, and lowest cost of service

  10. Approves capital projects to provide method of supplies or changes to the electric services to customers, alternate supplies, and distributed energy resources (DER) and interconnections to the Distribution System

  11. Partners with Regional Engineering and Work Management to achieve overall PPL Electric Utilities work scope identification, prioritization, quality scheduling and timely execution. Coordinates activities on work scope execution with contract engineering organizations.

  12. Manages employees and directs activities of PPL Electric Utility's Distribution Engineering work scope and resource plan for capacity, maintenance, system upgrades and asset optimization projects to efficiently execute the necessary engineering work required to maintain and improve system reliability, support ongoing system maintenance, and provide system upgrades and improvements to meet load capacity requirements.

  13. Directs the development of best in class engineering estimates, manages changes in cost, and adjust budget accordingly. ensures that the estimates, estimating processes, standards, Construction Units, information systems, and work practices accomplish accurate, effective, and efficient estimates.

  14. Provides leadership to Research and Development Engineering (R&D) on research projects and drive for implementations of innovative technologies on the PPL Transmission and Distribution Systems to make improvements in efficiency and present PPL as a leading company on technologies and innovation; oversee the budget and mutual activities with external research organizations such as EPRI, NEETRAC, and universities on forensic analysis for failed assets and research projects.

  15. Single point of contact for Distribution planning, interconnection, distributed energy resource interconnection and planning as well as Asset Management organizations; ensuring work method development and field operations involvement in technology rollouts; interface routinely with Supply Chain, Work Management, Information Systems Department, Transmission Organization, and regional employees on the 5-year budget plan.

  16. Partners with Distribution Operations to achieve safe and reliable electric distribution system performance, ensure all national codes (NESC, ANSI, Lighting, etc.), procedures and requirements are correctly interpreted, applied, and met as well as successful implementation of the annual MSR/ISR/AOS/USF distribution plans.

  17. Provides leadership and manages activities within Tariff Engineering to support developments of rate cases and PPL compliance to regulatory mandates including NERC, Public Utility Commission & PJM. Manages the relationship between PPL EU and the PA PUC, industry associations such as EEI and EAPA, EPRI, and NEETRAC as well as individual utilities on matters pertaining to system reliability, distribution capacity planning, distribution equipment performance and programs, storm restoration results, as well as reporting timely and accurately to interrogatories, audits, rule makings, regulatory requests, benchmarking initiatives and other inquiries.

  18. Develops departmental goals for both Distribution planning, interconnection, distributed energy resource interconnection and planning as well as Asset health and programs organizations including business, production and/or organizational priorities that establish PPL Electric Utility's engineering work and asset strategies between all engineering groups that helps ensure safe, reliable and cost-effective system performance and meets customer expectations and regulatory requirements.

Position Summary:

The position is responsible to provide leadership and manage employees, business processes, and activities within the Distribution planning, distributed interconnections, Distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection and Asset health and programs. The position provides leadership to PPL Electric Utilities managers in the area of creation, coordination, prioritization and resource planning for Distribution Engineering and Asset Management organizations. Manages and directs the creation and prioritization of the distribution system 5-year budget, presently valued at $300 million dollars annually, as well as identification and adherence to the approved budgets and resource plans. Accountable for the performance and results of company-wide system reliability initiatives and analyses including the preparation of economic and reliable distribution engineering design standards and specifications for the entire PPL EU electric distribution infrastructure. In addition, provides strategic directions to the company on the development of the 5-year budget plan and programs, distribution capacity planning and approve decisions impacting the asset management portfolio and material procurement demand projections with the high focus on improving the reliability of the distribution system, maintaining high performance infrastructure, and providing methods of supply and quality services to customers; responsible for budget analysis and project administrations for alignments with the corporate financial goals, as well as the performance and results of the scheduling and prioritization of engineering work scope and execution. Accountable for reporting to the PUC on system reliability performance. Provides leadership and direction on new technologies and integration of distributed energy resources within the PPL service territory. The position also responsible for the coordination of workflow between the engineering groups, Asset Management, and other departments within PPL Electric Utilities and ensures PPL compliance to regulatory mandates, including Reliability Standards by NERC, PUC, and PJM. This position is one of the primary interfaces with Regional Engineering, Work Management, Supply Chain, Crews, and Contract Management for all 5-year budget plans, engineering work identification and execution.

This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.

  3. The company reserves the right to determine if this position will be assigned to work on-site, remotely, or a combination of both. Assigned work location may change. In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in an engineering related discipline

  2. Minimum of 10 years' experience in functions relating to electric utility engineering, operations and planning or other related industries

  3. Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience
