This position will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL


This position is responsible for providing instrumentation and controls (I&C) technical support services to the generating facilities within the Southern Company. Support services include, but are not limited to, control system problem identification and resolution, field instrumentation problem identification and resolution, networking design and implementation, checkout and startup of new equipment, project detail design assistance as required and, preparation and presentation of various studies and reports. Individuals in this position must be able to perform configuration of controls systems, including defining the input/output (I/O) list, development of operator graphics, process alarm implementation, and implementation of control logic for utility power plant equipment in our renewables area such as solar plants, wind facilities, Remote Operations, M&D Center, etc.

This position reports to the I&C Controls Supervisor within the Technical & Project Solutions (T&PS), Technical Services Organization.


The successful candidate:

  • Will be responsible for performing hands-on support for process control equipment (e.g. Programmable logic controllers (PLC) programming, Real-Time Automation Controllers (RTAC), Human Machine Interface (HMI) development, wiring schematics, networking schematics, instrumentation, drives and motor-control systems)

  • Will function as a technical consultant to support the plant with instrumentation and controls related issues and troubleshooting

  • Will assist in specification, configuration, field checkout, procurement, and startup of control systems

  • Will be required to provide input into project scope definitions, estimates, and schedules

  • May be required to serve as the I&C Lead on small projects and potentially provide oversight and direction for other engineers and design personnel

  • Will support development and management of functional logic reviews and tests for control systems and associated equipment

  • Will support the management of a preventive maintenance and calibration program for instrumentation and control systems

  • Will be required to work closely with OEMs and plant system owners on the design and purchase of new equipment and modification to existing control systems platforms

  • Must participate in the development and maintenance of P&IDs, electrical drawings, and I/O lists

  • Will be required to perform client/server administration and communications network maintenance

  • May be responsible for assisting with cyber security initiatives, regulatory compliance, and process improvements



  • A.S Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology, Industrial Controls or equivalent degree/experience is preferred

  • B.S. in Electrical, Controls, Mechanical, Chemical, or other related engineering field from an ABET accredited institution is preferred

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration is a plus

  • Advanced degree in Business (M.B.A.) or Engineering (M.S.) is a plus


  • Control system design, maintenance, or engineering experience (5 years minimum preferred) in power generation, pulp and paper, or other heavy industry is preferred

  • Experience with Programmable logic controllers (PLC) and/or Real-Time Automation Controllers (RTAC,) is required

  • Experience working as a team member with other engineers and designers in office and field environments is preferred

  • Experience in supporting control system installation, specification, checkout, commissioning, troubleshooting, administration, graphics and tag database development, configurations and programming, and startup activities is required

  • Experience in supporting field instrumentation installation, checkout, and startup activities is required

  • Experience with Windows, Python, C Programming language, Structured Text is preferred

  • Experience with process instrumentation, including transmitters, switches, valves, and motors is preferred

  • Experience with P&IDs, SAMA diagrams, binary logic diagrams, loop sheets, motor elementaries, interconnection/schematic diagrams, and ISA data sheets is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Behavioral Attributes

  • Moderate to high knowledge of architecture, administration, configuration and graphics development for Programmable logic controllers (PLC) and Real-Time Automation Controllers (RTAC,) is required

  • Moderate to high level of proficiency in client/server administration and communications network design and maintenance is required

  • High degree of familiarity with personal computers and servers, network equipment, and cyber security is required

  • Knowledge of proper selection, installation, and calibration of process instrumentation is required

  • Proficient understanding in the use and development of design documents including P&IDs, electrical single lines, elementary diagrams, control wiring diagrams, instrument data sheets, instrument installation details, functional logic drawings, specifications, project scopes, estimates and schedules, etc. is required

  • Working knowledge of turbine controls systems is preferred

  • Plant process knowledge is highly preferred

  • Ability to effectively communicate with team members, supervisors and management is required

  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships across department and organization lines is required

  • This position will require approximately 30-40% travel per year

  • This includes both day-trip and overnight travel, primarily within the Southern Company Generation fleet
