The Manager, Advanced Power System Lab (APS) will have the opportunity to help build and maintain a high fidelity model of the entire New York State Grid to conduct research, incorporate technology & market redesign to change the evolution of the electrical grid. This as an innovative environment to promote collaboration among NY State utilities, universities and technology providers. Responsibility incudes supporting the implementation of the Advanced Power Systems Lab business strategy and recommending program priorities, scope, and direction in consultation with the Director, Advanced Power Systems Lab. The candidate will need technical expertise and the credibility to obtain grants, strong business acumen with the ability to operate under a stand-alone profit and loss (P&L), strategic and leadership skills to build the Advanced Power Systems business model. The VP champions NYPA mission to deliver value to the ratepayers of the State of New York; believes that collaboration is the best and most cost effective way to address shared challenges; understands the tight linkage and interplay between technical and market solutions.
Implement Lab objectives, and support the Director Advanced Power Systems Lab in managing the Power Systems Lab and in carrying out the strategy, business plan and efforts of a multidiscipline team.
Manage and supervise the day-to-day activities of the Advanced Power Systems staff in building the Advanced Power Systems lab and executing the lab’s objectives.
Carry out the Advanced Power Systems Lab mission in the areas of advanced transmission applications, cyber-security, automation, sensors and power electronics. The Manager must have the communication and interpersonal skills to interface with all levels of internal and external constituents.
Lead both collaborations and business relationships with utilities, vendors, agencies, and others to execute the mission of the lab.
Work with team to design schedules of annual, quarterly, and monthly goals and objectives and manage process of holding managers and staff accountable for them.
Supervise preparation of business plans and expenditure requests for executive management and Trustee approval.
Support the preparation of the yearly operating budget for lab, and oversee ongoing budget management process.
Ensure development and training of lab staff to optimize their talents and contributions.
Represent NYPA on select task forces, committees and boards as directed by the Advanced Power Systems Lab Director.
Communicator who can share a clear vision of the future and build excitement.
Understands needs of customers, able to manage Return on Investment (ROI), and meet financial targets.
Ability to motivate people to achieve desired results.
Ability to plan and oversee projects from start to finish and have the associated managerial skills.
Ability to cultivate multiple stakeholders (government, utilities, industry, universities).
Technical expert with credibility in the field.
Strategic acumen, to implement flexible and adaptable strategies to achieve organizational goals by understanding the organization's capabilities and external market conditions, the regulatory environment and technological advancements. Supports the design of short and long-term strategies/programs that are scalable and efficient.
Ability to maintain a work environment and develop staff to act with a focus on assigned tasks, is adaptable and overcomes resistance to change. Proven track record in recruiting and building a team and creating a performance culture.
Position is in New York State in the Albany area and requires approximately 25% travel, primarily in NY State.
Valid NY State driver’s license, which must be maintained throughout employment.
Masters in Engineering, Electric Engineering preferred.
10 years' of applicable experience
Experience in running a power systems lab
Body of published research related to integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER).
Demonstrated ability to obtain research grants.
Professional leadership experience in two or more domains (academic, utility, regulatory, industry vendor).
Track record as a principal investigator or research lead in an academic environment or head of a research and development industry.
Ability to incubate new ventures and develop to full maturity
