National Grid Director, Data Management and Governance in Waltham, Massachusetts

_About the Position:_

National Grid’s Director, Data Management and Governancewill be responsible for developing and deploying the company’s data management framework for improving data quality, cleanliness, timeliness, and accessibility across the enterprise. A robust data management program is critical to the execution of major strategic initiatives, and this enterprise leadership role has significant executive visibility and support.

Together with key stakeholders across the company, the Director will create the operating model by which data management responsibilities and accountabilities are shared across functional and system boundaries. She/he will have a key role in building the newly-formed Center of Excellence focused on standardizing and sharing best practices in the area of data management. The Director will be responsible for benchmarking and developing the organization’s data management capability and maturity levels. This role will have significant interaction with a similar UK-based position in developing a global governance framework.


_Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):_

Directly oversee the US-regional data management program

  • Establish and lead a US Data Management Center of Excellence (CoE) composed of up to 9 analysts and subject-matter experts and an annual budget of $2M

  • Lead the US Data Management Community of Practice, a group of 20 data management practitioners, stewards, and owners across the organization

  • Lead the US Data Steering Group responsible for program governance, monitoring, and risk reduction

  • Establish and facilitate a Global Data Management Community of Practice across the US and UK operating regions

Lead a step change in our approach to data management

  • Through the CoE, provide ongoing guidance, coaching, and expertise to the functional business leaders to enable successful delivery of data management implementation plans

  • Lead the delivery of the Strategic Data Management Roadmap across the US business

  • Work with senior executives to build the organizational capability and drive a cultural change in relation to data management

  • Working with senior executives across the business, lead the improvement of processes around data management compliance, policies, practices and measurement through championing both internal and external best practice

  • Keep up to date with leading industry data management best practices and act as a subject matter expert in their application

Ongoing ownership and maintenance of the Data Management framework

  • Act as the US-regional document owner for the global data management principles and information standards

  • Work with senior business leaders and stakeholders to implement these standards across the US business

  • Working with senior executives, lead the establishment of the governance and assurance model for Data Management, including measurement systems, and provide assurance to senior leadership, as appropriate

  • Build best practice forums – ensure that organizational learnings and best practices are shared both across the US and globally

Build data management capability

  • Working with key senior executives across both the US and UK, lead the benchmarking and measurement of National Grid’s global data management skills/capability framework

  • Act as the US-regional document owner for the global skills capability framework

  • Work with senior business leads and stakeholders to implement the skills capability framework across the US business

_Knowledge & Experience Required:_

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Information Systems, or related area. MBA or other graduate-level degree preferred

  • Detailed understanding of all facets of data governance including data architecture and modeling, data quality management, data profiling, metadata management, master data management, and data integration

  • 10 years of experience with developing and implementing enterprise-level data governance programs

  • 5 years of experience successfully leading an enterprise-level data governance program

  • 5 years of experience building and managing teams in an IT or data management context

  • Demonstrated ability to partner with a cross-functional teams, executive leadership, subject matter experts, and architects to develop a comprehensive data governance framework and enterprise-wide implementation of the strategy

  • Demonstrated ability to drive sustainable process changes that realize significant business value
