Summary

The Overhead Design Engineer Sr./Consultant will manage and support the engineering/design efforts for the company's Strategic Transmission Plan. These include projects ranging from 230kV to 500kV spanning the majority of the state. The projects will be engineered and designed by an external consultant through a future Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreement. Additionally, oversight will be provided by an external Owner’s Engineer. Duties of the APS Overhead Design Engineer will include managing the external EPC and Owner’s Engineer firms, tracking and monitoring quality and timeliness of deliverables, and developing and implementing quality assurance/quality controls of the contractors. Responsibilities will include ensuring designs meet APS engineering standards, assist and lead in development of standards where they may not exist, and reviewing and approving critical aspects of the design. The successful candidate will coordinate and/or interact with key internal functional areas and various external entities.

Minimum Requirements

Engineer Senior

  • A four-year Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) plus eight (8) years working experience in Engineering-related positions.

  • Approved degrees: Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Math, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Architectural, Structural. (A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by Engineering department management.)

    Engineer Consultant

  • A four-year Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) plus 14 years of applied electric utility generation, transmission or distribution engineering experience.

  • OR, MS/MEng degree or PE plus 12 years of applied electric utility generation, transmission or distribution engineering experience.

  • At least seven (7) years of accumulated experience must be directly related to the assigned Business Unit function.

  • Relevant experience from other industries will be considered.

  • All applicants for this position must be reviewed and approved by the Business Unit Head of Engineering.

    Approved Engineer degrees:

    Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Math, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Architectural, Structural.

    (A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by the Engineering Career Path Review Board to determine equivalency level.)

    Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE).

  • Experience in the energy industry or a consulting services environment.

  • Experience with oversight responsibilities for EPC and/or Owner’s Engineers.

  • Relevant experience with PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, PLS-TOWER, and AutoCAD and/or MicroStation

  • Experience using RISA-3D and/or STAAD for structural analysis and design

  • Functional understanding of AISC “Specification for Structural Steel Buildings”, ACI 318-14 “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete”, and ASCE/SEI 7 “Minimum Design Loads for buildings and Other Structures”, ASCE/SEI 10 “Design of Latticed Steel Transmission Structures”, and ASCE/SEI 48 “Design of Steel Transmission Pole Structures”

  • Functional understanding of NESC, EIA-TIA, CSA, and GO95 Codes

Major Accountabilities

  • Monitor and coordinate engineering work performed by external contractors to achieve successful project results.

  • Leading the overhead engineer/design efforts and being accountable for ensuring deliverables meet quality metrics, are on time, and within budget.

  • Establish project timelines and monitor specific project schedules and milestones to ensure project in-service dates are achievable. Review with management and provides status updates to stakeholders as requested.

  • Build strong partnerships and effectively interface with team members, EPC firm, and Owner’s Engineer.

  • Performing and evaluating inspections ensuring APS requirements are met.

  • Ensuring APS is delivered with engineering and design documents meeting all APS standards.

  • Coordination with local utility, municipality, government, and contractor representatives.

  • Research new developments and technology and make recommendations to management on their feasibility for Company operations.

  • Develops and applies unique solutions and applications to a broad range of technical issues and problems (solutions that typically require original and creative approaches).
