AREVA AFS - Civil/Structural Engineer II-III (MOX) in Aiken, South Carolina


CB&I/AREVA MOX Services, LLC is a consortium of companies based in Aiken, SC and formed to advance the Department of Energy's mission to dispose of surplus weapon grade plutonium. The plutonium is disposed of by mixing it with uranium and forming a mixed oxide (MOX) fuel for use in existing nuclear reactors. After the MOX fuel is irradiated in the reactor, the plutonium can no longer be used for nuclear weapons. AREVA Federal Services provides resources to MOX Services for the design, construction, licensing and operations of the MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) to be built at the Savannah River Site. Resources provided are in the following disciplines: Licensing, ES&H, Integrated Safety Analysis, QA, Engineering Assurance, Process Engineering, Systems Engineering, Design and Engineering (Structural, Electrical, I &C, Seismic, Nuclear Criticality, Piping, Mechanical, HVAC), Project Safety, Procurement, Project Controls, Software Design, Training, Records Management, Operations, and Information Technology.

AREVA Federal Services LLC, a subsidiary of AREVA, is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer II-III.

Under moderate supervision, this position develop design documents (drawings, calculations, data sheets) based on industry codes and standards and evaluate design or conformance to those industry codes and standards. Duties include generation of design documentation, and/or resolution of non-conformances.

The selected individual will be responsible for the following:

  • Perform engineering analyses and designs with general management and supervisory direction. Develop and check analyses, drawings, technical reports and documentation of results.

  • Layout of commodities and designing of supports.

  • Qualification of embed plates using ACI 249-01 Appendix B.

  • Produce technically correct, constructible, engineered design drawings, reports and specifications

  • Perform a variety of engineering work in the planning and design phases of the project

  • Apply in-depth skill to address complex problems and nonstandard situations

  • Manage time to meet objectives

  • Forecast and plan response requirements

  • Explain standard concepts and obtain consensus on the design approach

  • Develop the project design basis

  • Perform engineering calculations, drawings, specifications and other design deliverables

  • Communicate clearly with peers, technical and non-technical personnel, designers and other disciplines

  • Integrate knowledge of functional priorities

  • Ensures effective management of change

All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.

  • BS in Civil/Structural or Construction Engineering/Engineering Technology plus 1-3 years of related engineering experience. An advanced degree may be substituted for related exp. (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.). In applicable states a PE license will be accepted in lieu of a 4 yr engineering degree.

  • Experience in interpreting engineering codes, and construction standards, techniques and criteria.

  • Qualify supports or design of structural steel using GTstrudl and/or ANSYS

  • Design specific CAD software programs (eg Microstation or Autodesk)

  • Organized, technically competent, have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.

  • Working knowledge of National Codes and Standards such as ASME, AISC, ASTM, and ANSI standards.

  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for engineering, analysis and design of safety-related structures.

  • Experience in a nuclear construction environment
